Where is Lake Atitlan?
Guatemala is just south of Mexico and the northern most country in Central America. Lake Atitlan is in what is called the Western Highlands, the heart of the Mayan world.

Mayan vendors from every corner of Guatemala come to Atitlan to sell their wares. The woman on the right is from Chajul, a six to eight hour drive from the lake. (34K)

Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlan sits 1563 m. (5,128 ft.) above sea level, has a surface area of 127.7 sq. km. (49.3 sq. mi.) and is 320 m. (1,049 ft.) deep, the deepest lake in the Western Hemisphere.

Three enormous volcanoes make up the lake's southern shore. On the right is Volcano Atitlan with an altitude of 3,557 m. (11,670 ft.). Toliman stands in front at 3,158 m. (10,361 ft.) San Pedro is in the distance at 3,020 m. (9,908 ft.). (33K)
