All photographs on this page were taken in vilages around Atitlan and Antigua between 2000 and 2005.
San Lucas Toliman
San Lucas, while one of the largest towns on the lake, is one of the rarely visited by travelers.
Solola Market
Solola is a half hours bus ride from Panajachel. Market day is every Tuesday and Friday. While not as famous as the market in Chichicastenango, it is even more colorful.
Antigua
Unlike the Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan, Antigua (about two and a half hours drive from Lake Atitlan) is a Spanish colonial city. It was the original capital of New Spain and the center of the Catholic Church in the New World.
Luciano Pavarotti visits Atitlan
In 2005 Luciano Pavarotti generously donated an arts and crafts center to the town. He came to the inauguration.
While San Lucas Toliman, on the lake's southern shore, is one of the largest towns in the region, there is only one good hotel, Hotel Toliman. The hotel also has the town's best restaurant and garden.
